Name. Image. Likeness.

Tennessee became the 20th state to approve Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) for High School Athletes. Tennessee is the second state in the South the approve NIL for High School athletes after Louisiana. In February 2021, a bill was introduced to allow intercollegiate athletes to earn compensation for the use of the athlete’s NIL.

As enacted, the Tennesee NIL Law authorizes an intercollegiate athlete at a four-year public or private institution of higher education located in this state (Tennessee), other than an institution of higher education governed by the board of regents of the state university and community college system, to earn compensation for the use of the athlete’s name, image, or likeness under certain conditions.

Tennessee athletes and administrators alike must ensure that they understand the rules and regulations of House Bill 1351. Understanding the dos and don’ts of the Tennessee NIL will help all parties navigate the new regulation safely and successfully. sight. The next most important component is the compliant NIL element. Not only do students struggle to reach agreements that comply with established regulations but they also need to be transparent with their schools to avoid institutional conflicts.
